Gifted Hands

I hope you enjoyed our all school read, Gifted Hands. The story describes Ben Carson's journey from a struggling student to an extraordinary neurosurgeon. Gifted Hands elaborates on the different experiences of Dr. Carson's life and the obstacles he overcame.

For our first blog post, I want to know what part of Gifted Hands you found most interesting. Please describe it and explain what you learned from that part of the story.

Whenever you write on the blog, be sure to use complete sentences with good punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. This blog post will require at least two or three sentences to be complete and answer both parts of the question. This assignment is due Friday, August 16th. Happy blogging!

  2. I think the most interesting part of Gifted Hands was whenever he worked with twins, especially the ones that died. It raised the question "Why did they die?" It was interesting to me because whenever you have serious problems and you're like THIS IS JUST HORRIBLE! Well, know you know that some other people like Carson have horrible problems, like when people die. It is interesting, and just nice to know that I am not the only person with problems that make me so sad, angry, and unhappy.

  3. I think the most interesting part was when he was doing surgeries. It was just so thrilling how one minute somebody was about to die and then the next minute they were saved, and he was doing what many people thought was impossible. I believe Ben Carson made a big difference in the world. I also think that the part where he met Candy was interesting. I always love a sweet romance. ! Thanks for reading!

  5. The most interesting thing about the book was when Dr. Carson had to operate on Maranda Francisco. She was having one hundred seizures each day. He discovered that the left side of her brain was causing the right side of her body to twitch. He decided to operate on her brain to save her life. I learned that the left side of your brain controls the right side of your body and the right side of your brain controls the left side of your body.

  6. I think it was most interesting when Ben performed surgery on the simise children who were connected. Ben figured out a way to operate safely by stoping there hearts for one hour. Then he would be able to cut open the scalp and separate the brains without losing a lot of blood.

  9. I think The most interesting part was when Dr.Carson successfully did the surgery on all of the twins. I thought it was amazing how he completed most of the surgeries. It was sad when one set of the twins didn't make it. But I was glad that Dr.Carson tried. I learned from the story to be courageous. Dr.Carson was always courageous in his surgeries. I also loved how Dr.Carson would always give the parents a note to pray about the surgery and he would too. I really liked this book!

  14. My favorite part was when he was growing up he had a rough life but he also inspired me to never give up.
When he was in college that was cool when his class had to take a really hard test one kid said"I'm just going to say
that I never say the sign ". One by one they all got up and left but Ben was the only one that stayed. Just then his teacher
came into the room with a reporter he said"Ben congratulations you are the most truthful one in your class". We took a test
To see who would stay and be truthful" that also taught me to always stay truthful to your self. This book should teach everyone to
Be truthful and never give up! This is truly a great book it's one of my favorite books! :)

  15. In the book, Gifted Hands, the part that I found most interesting was when the kids at Ben Carson's school called him "class dummy", but it did not bother him. He stayed focused.

What I learned was to be yourself no matter what other kids say about you.

  17. I liked when he did all the surgeries on the Siamese twins. He was called a dummy when he was younger, but he was more than they thought! He didn't give up when he did the surgeries and he did the best he could. Like when the sisters (the small one and big one) depended on each other for survival, but he did the best he could and didn't give up! I also liked how he kept the person/people he was about to do surgery on in his prayers. That was really nice of him. He showed me that no matter what, through thick and thin, to always never give up.

  18. In the book, I found it very interesting that Carson was not always a great student and occasionally had a temper. I definitely learned that God will always
provide for you, just like how God provided for Carson by supplying him with money for bus fare in random situations. This is proof to always believe and trust in God. He will always have a plan for us, and we should always follow in his path.
